Grip strength predicts outcome.

چکیده
Sir—I was pleased to read the Research Letter of Kerr et al. in the January issue of this journal [1]. In it, they report a relationship between the grip strength and discharge disposition of elders admitted to hospital. Their research, though informative, is not the first to investigate ‘the link between grip strength and outcome in non-surgical settings’. For a primarily aged cohort of patients hospitalised with pneumonia, we have reported a significant correlation (−0.226) between the grip strength and a ‘bad acute outcome’; that is, an inhospital death or a length of stay of nine or more days [2]. We also found grip strength to correlate significantly with the length of stay (−0.269), discharge home (0.545) and 30-day survival (0.285) [3]. In a follow-up study, we showed that death within a year of hospitalisation was correlated with grip strength (−0.272) [4]. Grip strength was a stronger predictor than any other measured variable, including pneumonia severity, co-morbidity load, age or preadmission residence in an extended care facility. Considering Kerr et al.’s results in combination with our own, I would definitely agree that grip strength should be measured routinely ‘alongside the measurement of blood pressure’ [1]. Grip strength and other physical performance measures can ‘serve as easily accessible “vital signs” to screen older adults in clinical settings’ [5].

Midlife hand grip strength as a predictor of old age disability.
CONTEXT Poor muscle strength, functional limitations, and disability often coexist, but whether muscle strength during midlife predicts old age functional ability is not known. OBJECTIVE To determine whether hand grip strength measured during midlife predicts old age functional limitations and disability in initially healthy men. DESIGN AND SETTING A 25-year prospective cohort study, the Ho...

Background: Displaced fractures of radius and ulna bones in adults are usually treated with open reduction and internal fixation. The purpose of this research was to access functional outcome of these fractures. Materials and Methods: In this research 52 Patients who underwent ORIF with DCP 3.5 in past 5 years were investigated. Post-operation protocol was one week immobilization and then acti...
متن کاملComparing prognostic strength of acute corticospinal tract injury measured by a new diffusion tensor imaging based template approach versus common approaches.
BACKGROUND Long-term motor outcome of acute stroke patients with severe motor impairment is difficult to predict. While measure of corticospinal tract (CST) injury based on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in subacute stroke patients strongly predicts motor outcome, its predictive value in acute stroke patients is unclear. Using a new DTI-based, density-weighted CST template approach, we demonstr...
متن کاملThe association between toe grip strength and osteoarthritis of the knee in Japanese women: A multicenter cross-sectional study
We evaluated the relationship between altered foot function and knee osteoarthritis through a specific comparison of toe grip strength in older women with and without knee osteoarthritis. Participants were 120 women with knee osteoarthritis (OA group) and 108 healthy community-dwelling women with no history of knee pain and lower limb surgery (control group). The following factors and outcome v...
